About this deal

Video performance is rather solid with OIS smoothing out jittery hand movements – at least when using the main rear sensor – with fun video modes like Portrait Video and a unique stabilisation mode that’ll work when rotated a full 360 degrees further improving the experience. It caps out at 4K@30fps both on the front and rear, with the former being fairly unique in the mid-range market. Performance Once again, if you want top-of-the-line excellence, be prepared to shell out for the Edge 40 Pro. While all aspects of the Edge 40’s performance are sufficient, you’re ultimately getting what you pay for. In good lighting you'll get some lovely results, full of colour and vibrancy, with options in the camera app for a level and grid to help composition. There's also a suite of AI functions that aim to improve your images. This isn't unique to Motorola, but there are a number of options you can tweak to your preference. The ultrawide doubles as a macro camera thanks to the high-resolution sensor and produces decent images, with the colour output from the ultrawide generally matching the main camera, which is great for consistency across photos.

Motorola Edge 40 review: A great sub-flagship phone - Pocket-lint

Simply put, for everyone except high-end mobile gamers, the performance of the Edge 40 is more than adequate. This is my first Moto phone. I have been using Mi or Redmi series phone since long time and dabbled in Samsung M series once whic was very horrible experience. The Edge 40's 144 Hz display ensures that content is displayed smoothly. The responsivity is also good, as the touchscreen is scanned 360 times per second and reacts very precisely to inputs. The display glass is curved on the long sides, which makes the edges particularly narrow. One could be forgiven for assuming that this might result in increased input errors, but we did not encounter any during the course of our tests. The Edge 40 Pro display is great, it's nice and vibrant, with the option to turn down the saturation if you want something a little more neutral; It's a great-looking display, boosted by the 1300 nit brightness to help it cut through reflections on sunny days. This also puts some oomph into HDR content, with HDR10+ and Dolby Vision both supported - if you can find content that supports it.

Motorola Edge 40 review: Clean Android and long-lasting

The Motorola Edge 40 is an elegant Android phone that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using for the duration of the review period, offering a svelte design, competent cameras, a long-lasting battery, and fast charging at a competitive price. I’m also a huge fan of the way that it fully encompasses the camera housing, helping the phone visually stand out from the competition, and providing a rather clean overall look. Overall, the Edge 40 is excellently manufactured and makes a valuable and robust impression. At a height of 7.49 millimeters and a maximum weight of 171 grams, it is very light and thin for a smartphone of its size. The Edge 40 gets quite hot during operation. We measured up to 48.9 °C on the surface after a 1-hour stress test. It should be noted here that we used the very demanding Burnout benchmark for the stress test, which is why such high temperatures are quite normal. It does have its flaws. Expect a smaller accessory market compared to the likes of the Google Pixel 7a, a weaker camera than the iPhone 14, and fewer regular updates than the Galaxy S23. But if none of these are overly important to you, then its considerable strengths and affordability may just seal the deal. This is all confirmed by benchmark tests too, with the Edge 40 scoring 3542 points in the Geekbench 6 multi-core test. For context, the Google Pixel 6a scored 2900, while the slightly cheaper Samsung Galaxy A54 scored 2703. In fact, it’s not far from the Realme GT 3’s 3842 and that uses the (year old) flagship Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

If that doesn't bother you any more than the USB-C port that runs at USB 2.0 speed, or the missing microSD slot, you'll get a very solid midrange smartphone in the Edge 40. When making calls, the smartphone transmits our voice quite clearly and understandably to our conversation partner, even in hands-free mode. VoLTE and WiFi calling are supported. Furthermore, there is also the strong 50 MP camera with impressive light output, good stereo speakers and a long battery life despite the comparatively small battery. The ARM GPU Mali G77 MP9 integrated in the MediaTek Dimensity 8020ensures good gaming performance. Demanding games such as PUBG Mobile run smoothly at a constant 40 fps at the maximum selectable HDR/Ultra setting. However, the smartphone can only exhaust the potential of its 144 Hz display in graphically simple games such as Subway Surfers.
